Down at the Bottom of the Garden
‘Down at the Bottom of the Garden’
100 x 100 cm, Mixed media on deep-edge box canvas
A vibrant, layered dreamscape celebrating childhood imagination, vintage toys, and the enduring power of play.
This mixed media painting crafted with collage, spray paint, acrylic ink, and acrylic paint; takes inspiration from a box of rediscovered He-Man figures unearthed in my husband’s childhood loft. Down at the Bottom of the Garden reimagines those heroic 1980s adventures through an adult lens, steeped in nostalgia, memory, and symbolism.
At the heart of the composition stands a fantastical tree, a hybrid of the mythological Tree of Life and the biblical Jesse Tree. A sleeping ginger cat cat is cradled in the roots.
Infused with folk art, medieval motifs, and personal history, this piece is a heartfelt tribute to the emotional landscapes we first mapped in gardens and bedrooms with plastic heroes in hand. This painting is a love letter to the toys we lost and the memories we’ve kept.
Interested in a commissioning a dreamscape featuring your childhood toys? Whether it’s Star Wars, My Little Pony, Thundercats, or Sylvanian Families, I’d love to bring your memories to life on canvas.
